Adding a Name or Text

Unknown | 5:28:00 PM | 0 comments

Difficulty: Intermediate
Objective: Want to customize an object with a name, logo, or quote? This post will go over the basics to engrave / extrude text to an object in Blender. If you are wanting to take a logo from an image, you will need to first make that logo a 3d object and then you can skip to step 8. For more information about making a 3D model from an image: http://3dprintingninja.blogspot.com/2014/12/how-to-make-a-3D-model-from-an-image.html

How to create a text

  1. In Object Mode, Add text [Shift]+[A]
  2. Go into Edit Mode, delete the text and type your new text
  3. Go back into Object Mode
  4. Open the font menu as seen in the image below
  5. Extrude the text, You can also mess with the other options such as bevel
  6. Optional: If you want a different font style you can import that font from where it is saved on your computer. For a mac, your fonts are found in Hard Drive-->Library-->Fonts. For a windows it is usually C-->Windows-->Fonts. (Once imported they are saved in Blender and you can choose the style from the blue button.)
You can also change the User Settings so that you do not have to take all the steps to find the font as seen below every time.
  7. Convert the text into a mesh [Alt]+[C]. If you do not do this you, it will not print or let you do a boolean modifier.
  8. Position the text to intersect you object
  9. Use a Boolean modifier. See this post for more info: http://3dprintingninja.blogspot.com/2014/11/boolean-trouble.html
  10. Check for non-manifolds as text often creates them. Usually a quick non-manifold fix for text is to remove the double vertices. See this post for more info: http://3dprintingninja.blogspot.com/2014/07/non-manifolds-your-worst-nightmare.html

Optomize the orientation

The text will print best vertically because the layers are thinner vertically than horizontally.

Do you need supports for your text?

No, if the text only overhangs a little then it should be able to print.

How small is too small?

This has to do with your printer's resolution and nozzle diameter.

Kep in mind that evn if yur txt isnt prfct it is still readable.
